Once part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire, after that under Communist rule and now part of the European Union, Hungary lies on the border between the west and east of Europe. One of our reasons to go there was to find out whether it would be a nice place to buy a holiday cottage when it was still cheap. Well, it was not.
