During the second half of the 18th century more and more artists began to settle in Montmartre, attracted by the low rents. Pissarro and Jongkind were the first to come and live here. They were followed by big names such as Henri Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Pablo Picasso, just to name a few. Musicians such as Erik Satie also lived here.
