After the Greek War of Independence (1821-1827), Nafplio was the first city to be freed from the Turkish occupation and temporarily the capital of the Free Greek Kingdom (1829 to 1835). The center and the harbor lie on a headland that protrudes a bit into the Argolic Gulf. There are mainly fishing boats and a single luxury yacht in the harbor.
