The Brontochion monastery, Mystras

The city of Mystras was built on a high hill in 1249 by a crusader (William II of Villehardouin) but 10 years later he was taken prisoner and had to give all his belongings, including this area, to the emperor, and Mystras became part of the Byzantine empire. During the heyday of the city, more than 40,000 inhabitants lived there and it became a cultural center. On the slopes you can still find the remains of churches, monasteries and palaces. It was the ancient Greeks who as early as the 7th century BC. imported the terracotta roof tiles that were spread throughout the rest of Europe via the Romans.
