Ardverikie is build on an extensive estate on the shores of Loch Laggan, in the south of the Highlands. The estate is private property, but we were allowed to walk there, since we stayed a few days at the Gate Lodge of the estate. Queen Victoria had almost bought the estate in the 19th century, but due to the bad weather when she stayed there for a month, the deal was off. Rumours say it was because of the midges, but there are not many when it rains.

The castle is now being used for a Scottish tv-series, the 'Monarch of the Glen' and has gotten the name Glenbogle. Most people will only see the castle from the other side of Loch Laggan. There are some parking places with nice views over the loch.

This is not really a castle on its own, it is the gate lodge which belongs to Adverikie Estate where the series 'Monarch of the Glen' has been filmed the last few years. But in some sense it is 'our' castle. We happened to drive by and fell in love with it immediately. It is located near Loch Laggan. Sometimes we made a detour for 100 km., just to see this beautiful place. March 2003 we spend here a few days, because it is to rent. It was great to be lord and lady of a castle for a few days!!!

The Gate Lodge has three floors and a spiral staircase going through the turret connects the floors. The castle is for hire but you have to be really in time; we had to book one year in advance!
