From it's high place on an extinct vulcano, the castle looks out over Edinburgh. The oldest part of the castle, St. Margaret's Chapel, dates back to the 12th century, although the stronghold of Eydin was mentioned already before 600 AD. Now one can see several different architectures because of all the renovations and additional buildings from later centuries.

The castle lies on the highest point of the socalled Royal Mile, a number of streets that go from the castle down to Holyrood Palace through the old town, together almost one mile long. The castle itself is really impressive and worth visiting. There are several guided tours and museums and you can easily spend a few hours in this place.

In the Great Hall is a museum of weaponry, the Crown Chamber has replica's of the Scottish crown juwels and the United Service Museum has a large display of uniforms worn by Scottish regiments throughout the ages. One can also see the Stone of Destiny, on which all kings of Scotland were crowned, after an absence of more than 700 years. In 1296 the Engelse king Edward I stole the stone and hid it in Westminster Abbey in London.
